Got upgraded from Z class to O from NRT to SFO with the Suite seat using 25,000 United miles.
The *A status might play a role. As a United Premier Platinum, my waitlist cleared 8 days before. (without any notice mail)
My dad waitlisted before me, and using ANA miles hasn’t cleared (same Z class).

For me they usually clear around a week in advance, but sometimes it’s been as short as 3 days or day of.
